NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF THE PHILIPPINES (NRCP)

NRCP LogoThe National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) promotes the advancement of science through researches. It was established on December 8, 1933 by virtue of Act 4120 of the 9th Philippine Legislature.

Throughout 76 years of experience, the NRCP has built up a body of Filipino men and women devoted to scientific research. From 114 pioneering Filipino researchers/scientists, its membership has grown to over 3,000, spread over its 13 scientific divisions: Governmental/Education/International Policies; Mathematics; Medical Sciences; Pharmaceutical Science; Biological Sciences; Agriculture/Forestry; Engineering/Industrial Research; Social Sciences; Physics; Chemical Sciences; Humanities; Earth and Space Sciences; and Veterinary Medicine (created on 11 March 2009).

NRCP is considered to the oldest collegial and scientific advisory arm of the Philippine government and the oldest science council in Asia, with more than 300 exceptional researches, which led to technological breakthroughs and applications, noteworthy of which are: the Geographical Mapping of the Philippine archipelago; establishment of Geothermal Plants for alternative/natural source of energy; use of Philippine Indigenous Herbs as source of alternative medicine/cure; introduction of Biological Pest Control; selection of Rice Strains; physiology/tissue culture of Coconut and Makapuno; development of soaps and cosmetics from Avocado Oil; cure for cancer and malaria; rat control methods; genetic enhancement of the Philippine Carabao; development of Dye Laser, Plasma device, and transmission of digital data.

DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (DOST)

DOST LogoDOST is the premiere science and technology body in the country charged with the twin mandate of providing central direction, leadership and coordination of all scientific and technological activities, and of formulating policies, programs and projects to support national development.

VISION: A competent and competitive science and technology community with a social conscience.

MANDATE: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) shall provide central direction, leadership, and coordination of scientific and technological efforts and ensure that the results there from are geared and utilized in areas of maximum economic and social benefits for the people.

PRINCIPLES: In the current arena of globalization science and technology have become the most important factor for national economic growth and source of competitive advantage.

Recognition of this fact has led technologically progressive nations and firms to invest substantial resources in research and development (R&D), technology acquisition and adaptation, S&T education and training, and S&T infrastructure.
